The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is an adjustable silicone band that is laparoscopically placed around the upper part of the stomach to control the flow of food and achieve rapid satiety. The LAP-BAND® System does not require cutting or stapling the stomach or intestinal rerouting and is a reversible procedure. Most importantly, the LAP-BAND® System procedure is safe and less invasive than other nonbanding weight loss surgeries, while providing comparable weight loss in the long-term.
We have been performing the LAP-BAND® System procedure at our practice for the last 4 years. This procedure was pursued as part of our multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and management of bariatric patients. Our presurgical workup includes multiple medical evaluations, dietary evaluation and counseling by our registered dietitian, a psychological evaluation by our mental healthcare provider, and a fitness evaluation by our exercise physiologist. Routine preoperative laboratory and diagnostic tests are performed, including routine blood tests, upper GI series, ultrasound of the gallbladder, pulmonary function testing, chest x-ray, and EKG.
